Landscapes of the Forgotten Forts explores relationships between history and art, war and peace, built and natural environments, absence and presence. Through photographs and poems, the three forts—Casey, Worden, and Flagler—that comprised the Triangle of Fire are portrayed, invoking their original purpose, now long overrun by nature. Kathy Fridstein has taken thousands of photographs of these forts, homing in on a mediation on history through a certain kind of beauty. Award winning poet Kelli Russell Agodon responds to several of Kathy Fridstein’s photographs to help create a reflective, lyrical history of the forts and interpret what it is like to be there now, juxtaposed with the current affairs of our country. Curator Kathleen Garret provides the foreword. Historian David Hansen contributes an essay to provide context for the forts; quotes from the soldiers stationed there weave throughout the pages evoking the ghosts from wars past and the relentless march of time.

KATHY FRIDSTEIN
Kathy Fridstein is an artist/photographer living with her husband in Port Townsend, WA. After receiving an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Kathy began a 40-year career of teaching in the Pacific Northwest and showing her art. Her work has been exhibited at regional and international venues, including the twentieth Julia Margaret Cameron Awards Exhibition, in Barcelona, and the Seattle Art Museum, where it was prominently featured in a three-person show, Altered Images. Her art is included in numerous public art collections, including the 1% Washington Public Art Purchase, the University of Washington Medical Center, and the Seattle Public Utilities Purchase. In 2025 she received an Artist Trust GAP award to help fund this book.
KELLI RUSSELL AGODON
Kelli Russell Agodon is an award-winning poet, editor, and author from Washington State. Her recent book is Accidental Devotions (Copper Canyon Press). Her last book, Dialogues with Rising Tides (Copper Canyon Press), was a Finalist for the Washington State Book Awards and shortlisted for the Eric Hoffer Grand Prize in Poetry. She is the cofounder of Two Sylvias Press and cohosts the poetry series, Poems You Need, with Melissa Studdard.
